What is it?
Basalt is a type of paramagnetic rock that contains iron and other magnetic elements that are beneficial for plant growth. Basalt is created when the mantle melts and then cools rapidly.
What is it used for?
It has been found that using basalt rock dust in soil can improve plant growth and yield. Especially Basalt which contains a higher level of paramagnetic intensity. We choose quarries with high magnetic readings, usually 5000-9000 CGS.
Paramagnetic Rock helps with seed germination and is often used in high quality seed starters. It increases a plants resistance to pests and disease. CEC is also improved, indicates how well soil supplies nutrients to plants.
Basalt rock dust is packed with micronutrients like magnesium, iron, and calcium. These nutrients assist with root growth, and drive bigger yields organically making it an ideal soil amendment. The high Brix reading indicates a high amount of dissolved solids.
As decomposing rock material reacts with soil micro-organisms and plant material, the rock material releases elements like calcium, magnesium and iron. Basalt contains a high content of readily metabolisable silica and lime which promote soil fertility.
Application rate?
When used in a existing bed. About 10 pounds of product, raked or lightly worked into the soil, is enough to cover a 100 square feet (10' x 10'). When mixing with soil, use about 10 pounds per yard.
How to apply?
Basalt can be applied by hand or with a manure spreader.
How often?
Using a smaller amount can be sufficient for the season, applying an abundant amount can last for a few years. Generally the recommended amounts are per growing season.
What season? Usually applied before the growing season but it can be applied anytime.
